I am an independently licensed mental health counselor and art therapist.

I am passionate about helping adults and adolescents create the life they want, by gaining insight, problem solving and re-discovering themselves during our therapeutic work. Each person is unique, so when we work together, we will create a therapeutic process specifically suited to your individual situation. I incorporate a range of theories and processes to help you move toward your vision of what you want, and what you want to experience in your life.

Whether you are an individual experiencing a recent life change, relational issues, or are struggling with feelings of anxiety or depression, my goal is to help you on your journey, starting where you are now, and moving forward at whatever pace feels right for you. We’ll probably even find some humor and joy in our meetings, as your unique path unfolds during our work together.

My intention is to help you find your authentic voice, purpose, and direction. I trust the process and believe we all have the innate capacity to heal ourselves. My approach is holistic and rooted in the formation of a strong therapeutic relationship. I follow the needs of each individual client. Using a mind, body, spirit approach, I allow space for the therapeutic process to unfold as our relationship develops. I offer grounding techniques, such as mindfulness processes and breath work. I encourage the exploration of internal experience within the body to be brought into present moment awareness.

Art making often brings awareness to blocked emotions that may have never been paid attention to. Insight and integration can be gained when these emotions are expressed. I believe we all have the wisdom to transform. I want to be help you discover your pathway to a more fulfilled life.

I offer individual clinical supervision in art therapy and mental health counseling for individuals working toward their national credentials, state licensing, and who are seeking to gain expertise in child, adult, family, or group therapy. I also offer a closed, highly structured Art Therapy Supervision Group twice a year.Supervision is designed to assist you in improving your clinical and case conceptualization skills, and to help you develop your professional identity and competency. As your supervisor, it is my responsibility to monitor your client care and function in four different roles: teacher, consultant, counselor, and evaluator. I will support your choice of counseling theory and expose you to additional approaches when appropriate. I will also acknowledge the limits of my scope of competence and, when necessary, encourage you to consult specialists in order to provide the highest standard of care for your clients. In order to provide the most ethical and competent supervision possible, I only accept a limited number of supervisees at any given time, and entry into the Art Therapy Group is by application so that I can assess your appropriateness of fit and commitment to the group process.

My supervision meets the standards established by the Art Therapy Credentials Board (ATCB), the NM Counseling and Therapy Practice Board, the American Counseling Association (ACA), and the Center for Credentialing and Education (CCE).

Katherine Paras, M.S. LPAT, ATR-BC, APP

ART AS THERAPY: ‘MIND’ AND ‘BODY’: Working with adults and children since 1972, I find that art-making can help people to clear pathways to their healing potentials. There are so many inner and outer experiences for which we have no words. Anchored within the body from the past and the present, the energies of these primary, non-verbal experiences shape our personalities, our health, and our relationships. By giving your body a ‘voice’ through color, line, gesture, and form, you can safely externalize and explore how these energetic patterns, centered within the body, enhance and obstruct life possibilities. These ‘conversations’ with foundational energies help you to release inner blockages and creatively meet outer problems, changing impasse and pain into joy of growth. The goal in our work together is threefold:

* Identify, explore, and shift old patterns that no longer serve you

* Develop individualized tools to use as you meet ongoing challenges

* Strengthen your self-healing capacities to build a life that nourishes you

ADULTS: CHALLENGES WE CAN FACE TOGETHER: At times a person may feel overwhelmed without knowing why. Or you may be in a stare-down contest with the wall before you – the marriage that has ended, or the job that takes but doesn’t give, chronic illness that drains all hope, the home emptied of children, the challenges of aging, the wished-for life partner who never appears. Learn more about how you can turn impasse into creative action and deep healing, on my website.

CHILDREN: Lost in the classroom, your child may have difficulty making friends. At home, children may simply have no words for either the confusion they feel as their parents separate, or the anger ignited by a newborn or step-siblings joining the family, or the fears that erupt as someone loved is very ill. Handicaps, physical or otherwise, can hide innate capacities and unnecessarily hinder their expression. Together we can help your child to heal and grow amid developmental or other life challenges.

My private practice, started in 1989, relocated to Santa Fe in the year 2000. I worked twenty years in New York City in many different settings helping people face diverse challenges: emotional adjustments, mental health and psychiatric problems, drug and alcohol addiction, special educational needs, mental developmental challenges, multiple handicaps, autism, and physical disability. I was the senior art therapy consultant for a citywide agency helping families and children, and a founding faculty member of the New York University Graduate Art Therapy Program. My mind-body healing career spans over twenty-five years, with extensive training in Energy Medicine modalities. In addition to private practice, I continue my work as educator and mentor.

“I approach therapy with a focused care and curiosity for what is coming forth from the client. I combine mindfulness with creative-expressive modalities to facilitate one’s unique therapeutic process. It is my honor to hold sacred space for you and create an atmosphere of possibility so that you may change, grow and rediscover meaning for your life’s work at this time. I find counseling to essentially be about remembering how to love ourselves and how to be in right relationship with all that is around us. Nature and art play essential roles in my philosophy of healing.”

I often work outdoors where we are exposed to the metaphorical language of nature and can tap into her deep wisdom and support. I gently guide and engage the process using visualization and expressive arts components. Life can be stressful and art therapy can assist in identifying and managing the emotions associated with feeling lost, hopeless, angry and anxious. I provide art therapy for pre-teens, adolescents and young adults. The art making process helps in building relationships with children and teens who may be resistant to sharing their emotions in a traditional talk therapy setting. I strive to assist my clients with creative expressive experiences to cultivate greater emotional balance and to help facilitate personal growth. I consider developmental, family structure and social/cultural factors when creating individualized treatment goals.
