Art Therapy Certification & Licensing in New Mexico

Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC)

The temporary LMHC is valid for 2 years, during which you either take your NCE or renew your temporary LMHC every 6-months.

If the applicant fails the first exam, the board will schedule the applicant to re-take the examination and will issue a second temporary license. If the applicant fails the exam a second time, the board may issue a third temporary license. The applicant must provide proof of registration in a tutorial class.
The board will not issue more than three temporary licenses.

Licensed Professional Art Therapist (LPAT)

You will need to complete 3000 direct contact hours and 100 supervision hours to apply for the LPAT “independent” license. 700 hours from internship are counted.

You will also need to pass the Art Therapy Credentials Board Examination (ATCBE)

Art Therapist Registered (ATR) &
Art Therapist Registered-Board Certified (ATR-BC)

NOW AVAILABLE: Provisional Registered Art Therapist requires the completion of a master’s level education that one can obtain upon graduation.

​Becoming a Registered Art Therapist (ATR) requires the completion of master’s level education (including art therapy core curriculum and supervised practicum and internship experiences) and post-education supervised clinical experience.

To obtain Board Certification (ATR-BC), an art therapist must currently hold registration as an art therapist (ATR), be in good standing with the ATCB, and successfully pass the Art Therapy Credentials Board Examination (ATCBE).
